Foot And Ankle Surgery
It is that time again. Time to resolve to continue good practices, change an undesired behavior, accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve one's life. Time to declare a New Year's resolution. For years I've done this and have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out what I should do. I can't say I have always lived up to my resolutions, but I repeat the process each year. This year, it was easy for me. I didn't have to think too hard about it. With my co-conspirator Dr Michael Dujela, I was at all costs to launch the first combined AO / ACFAS Basic Principles of Foot and Ankle Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery Course for DPMs. A venture that is a first of its kind. A collaboration of 2 educational powerhouses the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen (Association for the Study of Internal Fixation), commonly referred to as the AO and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS), to improve performance through education, and thereby to optimize surgical skills of the foot and ankle.

Surgery may be used to address a variety of foot and ankle conditions frombunions to tendon tears and severe arthritis. Typically, foot and anklesurgery is considered only after nonsurgical treatments have been attemptedwithout the desired result. However, certain conditions, especially acuteinjuries such as ankle fractures, may require immediate surgery.
There are numerous surgical procedures that can be used to treat foot andankle conditions. Depending on the type of condition, the goal of thesurgery may be to align broken bones, fuse painful joints, remove overgrowntissue or repair a torn ligament or tendon. In cases of significant damageand severe pain in the ankle joint, total ankle replacement may berecommended.

The muscles in your lower leg are attached to bones in your feet by tendons, and they control movement that allows us to stand, walk, go on tiptoes and jump. These muscles move your toes and control the position of your foot as it hits the ground, allowing it to become flexible and cushioning the impact. They also make the arches of your feet more rigid to push your body forward when you move.
Your heel bone is connected to the calf muscles in your lower leg by your Achilles tendon, which is the most important tendon for movement. The tibialis posterior tendon, which attaches the underside of your foot to your lower leg, helps supports the arch of your foot and allows you to turn it inward.
Versus Arthritis have recently awarded a grant for the OARS study, which will assess the major factors that predict what patients think (patient-reported outcome) in the first year after total ankle replacement.
The tibialis posterior is a muscle that supports the shape of your instep arch. The tendon that connects this muscle to the bone can become inflamed, leading to pain and swelling on the inside of your ankle. Continual swelling can start to cause the tendon to weaken, which can lead to a flatfooted look.
The plantar fascia is a tough band of fibrous tissue that starts at your heel bone and stretches across the sole of your foot to your toes. Plantar fasciitis is inflammation at the site where the fascia attaches under your heel. Very rarely, bad cases may need surgery to release the plantar fascia from the heel bone.
Before your surgery, your doctor or nurse will check your general health and give you information about preparing for surgery. Ask about any possible changes to your medication and any other questions you may have.
This study will also examine the relative costs and benefits of surgery. To collect this information, the researchers will use a newly developed questionnaire called patient-reported outcome measure, or PROM, on 600 people who have undergone ankle replacement surgery. This study will allow a greater understanding of who might benefit most from total ankle replacement for severe ankle disease.

The foot is comprised of an intricate network of bones, tendons and ligaments that support our body weight throughout each day. As such, injuries to the foot are common and range in complexity, from bunions and hammertoes to chronic arthritis and fractures.
The ankle is a sensitive joint in the body and can be easily injured. Non-surgical treatment methods can be effective in treating mild injuries, but when an ankle injury is severe, such as with a ligament tear of fracture, surgery may be necessary.
